Rationale for the Unit
I chose The Water Cycle as a unit plan because it is appropriate for fifth graders as a science unit. It is important that students learn about The Water Cycle because it is apart of our everyday life and it helps bring awareness to the children about where our water comes from and why it is important that we take good care of our environment and try our best to conserve water for our future.
This unit and the lessons within it comply with the New Jersey State Common Core Standards as it allows students to observe and discuss evaporation and condensation (NJ.5.4.2.G.1), explain how clouds are formed (NJ.5.4.4.G.1), and identify and use water conservation practices (NJ.5.4.2.G.2). This unit also communicates ways that humans can protect the environment and improve the living conditions for both plants and animals that live in it (NJ.5.3.2.C.3) The lessons involve the use of technology (NJ.8.1.2.A.2) as well as Language Arts (NJ.CC.1.RL.1, NJ.CC.2.SL.1, NJ.CC.1.SL.2, NJ.CC.1.L.6).
After the completion of this unit, students should have a clear understanding of The Water Cycle and its phases. They should understand how a rain cloud is formed and why we undergo different forms of precipitation. They will also understand the importance of Water Conservation.
